Importance of getting an English certificate

Certifying a good level of English is becoming more and more important nowadays. Let’s imagine you have just finished secondary school and you have thought you want to study to be a music or art teacher; the first thing you have to do is study several years at university until you have your teaching certificate. But then, before working in a school you will have to ‘compete’ and pass a selection procedure to get a position as a teacher. Do you know that in order to apply for the selection procedure you have to prove you have at least a level B1 of English (or another foreign language, such as French, German or Italian)? Yes, you are required to speak English even if you are specialized in music or arts, because the Spanish government wants to turn every school and secondary school into bilingual centres, that is to say, subjects would be explained both in English and in Spanish. This is done in order to help students to study a foreign language and to have as good level of English as the rest of European young people have. But in Spain children and teenagers will not have a good level of English if their teachers at school do not know that language. It is just for that reason why certifying a level PET or a B1 of English is compulsory to anyone who is thinking about becoming a teacher.

The importance of learning English

Nowadays speaking English is something indispensable. With every day that passes English language is used in almost all the fields of knowledge: science, mathematics, literature, biology, chemistry, sports, art, etc. It could be considered to be the language of the world, since it is widely spread and spoken all over the planet and it is considered to be a ‘lingua franca’ which has had an impact in every nation and field of study in the world.
Years ago knowing English was considered to be a luxury and only rich people learned it, but today it has moved from being a symbol of grandeur to being a necessity in this globalised world. Even it is said that it is a disadvantage not knowing English.  Some studies say that in seven years, English will be spoken by three thousand million people in the world, which means that in some years for the first time in the history mankind, men will be able to communicate in a single and global language: English! Without doubts this spread of language is a great change from the birth of language!

A little bit of history of English language

Many years ago and thanks to the British Empire the English language was spread to many countries in the world. And today English is still the official language in many nations which belonged to the British in ancient times. There are dialects which have emerged from those places and that is due to that mixing of cultures and language, so that, the English spoken in New Zealand is not the same as the English spoken in the United Kingdom, there are many differences in vocabulary, pronunciation and even in grammar. The two most known dialects of English language are British and American English. And these two are the dialects which are mostly used to teach English to those people who want to learn the language as a second or foreign language. For those who are thinking of start learning English I have to say ‘congratulations!’ Congratulations because you are interested in studying one of the easiest languages you can learn. Contrary to Spanish, English grammar is not complex, and the only difficulties you can find when studying it are irregular verbs, phrasal verbs or the pronunciation. So, cheer up! Study English!
